MPG Converter

The readers of this blog come from all parts of the world, where different units are used to measure fuel consumption.  Prompted by a reader's comment I decided to include this page to help you convert to the units of your choice.  This blog uses miles per UK gallon.  If you use different units then this page is for you!

  • A UK gallon (UK, Eire, Canada and Guyana - I think) is 4.546 litres.
  • A US gallon is 3.785 litres.

UK and US Gallons

So, from the above, a UK gallon is 1.201 times bigger than a US gallon.  Therefore, to convert the UK mpg in this blog to US mpg you will need to multiply the UK mpg figure by 1.201.

Here are some examples:
  • 50 UK mpg  X  1.201  =  60.050 US mpg
  • 40 UK mpg  X  1.201  =  48.040 US mpg
  • 35 UK mpg  X  1.201  =  42.035 US mpg

Conversely, you will need to divide any US mpg figure by 1.201 to get the equivalent UK mpg.  For example:
  • 65 UK mpg  /  1.201  =  54.122 US mpg

Metric

To convert UK mpg to a metric measure of kilometers per litre (km/l) you will need to multiply by 0.354.  For example:
  • 50 UK mpg  X  0.354  =  17.700 km/l
  • 40 UK mpg  X  0.354  =  14.161 km/l
  • 35 UK mpg  X  0.354  =  12.390 km/l

To convert US mpg to km/l you will need to multiply by 0.425.  For example:
  • 50 US mpg  X  0.425  =  21.259 km/l
